Callosa

Callosa de Ensarria is essentially an agricultural town dating back to the 12th century. Set on southern slopes and with an average temperature of 17°C, it has a typically mild and constant Mediterranean climate, ideal for fruit production. Particularly the meddler, also known as the loquat, has a current annual production of approximately 17 million kilos. The town owes its name to Admiral Bernat de Sarria, who bought the town in 1290, and made it the centre of an estate that covered most of the Marina Baixa area, passed down through various noble families to the Counts of Orgar in 1767 who are today's landlords.

The town itself has the neoclassic archdiocesan church of St. John the Baptist, inaugurated in 1568 and renowned for its baroque organ installed in 1754, and this church is home to concerts held every month. The fort on the top of the hill was built at the order of King Felipe II, with the purpose of defending the coast from attacks by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Also in the town is the first Ethnological and Archaeological Museum in the Marina Baixa district, with a permanent exhibition of former life styles of Callosa.
