Polop

10km inland from Benidorm is the town of Polop. Gabriel Miro, the writer, once said of this town, "I have just discovered a delightful place that the years have lulled to sleep." Set on a hill surrounded by lush vegetation, Polop was once the most important town in this area, especially in the years following the final expulsion of the Moorish settlers. With its steep streets, white washed walls, and ancient doors, this old town has an air of tranquility, and yet many people come to the town, and bring with them water containers to be filled at the splendid Chorros fountain. Here there are 221 spouts fed by the ever-cool waters of the Garrofet and Cotelles springs, pouring forth water renowned for its natural elements and exquisite taste. Exquisite taste can also be found in the town's restaurant, which cooks the local dishes in a traditional Moorish oven.

The attractive old quarter of the town has a parish church, and a steep path leads up to what was the site of the castle. This has been used more recently as a cemetery, described by Miro as that, "orchard of crosses", and from where it is now possible to appreciate from the views you can see, what a beautiful natural setting the town has surrounded by orange, lemon and almond groves.
